The Active D-Lighting function is included in the Nikon D5000 lens, which greatly improves detail when capturing photographs in shadows as well as enhancing high contrast scenes. The D-Lighting system uses a 420 pixel sensor to analyse a scene and adjust exposure accordingly in order to capture images close to what the human eye sees. Up to six different D-Lighting settings are available, which are extra high, High, Normal, Low, Auto and Off. This also comes with a mode that lets you shoot the same image with D-Lighting as well as without.

Thanks to the 11 point autofocus module, the D5000 can provide a fast, precise focus across a wide area of the frame when capturing photographs through the optical viewfinder. Four different AF modes are available, which are; dynamic-area AF for moving subjects, single-point AF for stationary, often off centre subjects, auto-area AF to automatically check the correct focus method and 3D-tracking for keeping focus on subjects even when composition changes.

Once a photograph is shot, the photo editing function allows for retouching in camera, which reduces the need for computer software to improve or change images. Using the Retouch Menu, the Nikon D5000 lens has many new editing options like, Perspective Control, Soft Filter and Colour Outline. The other good thing is that every editing function creates a copy of the image leaving the original as it was captured.

The Picture Control System enables Photographers to customise image capture characteristics to suit their preference. They come in six different settings which are Vivid, Monochrome, Portrait, Landscape, Standard and Neutral with the facility ability to create nine different Picture Control settings.
